SAN AGUSTIN LANGUAGE INSTITUTE

SALI Conversations Thriving

At 3:00 on weekday afternoons the Peru Mission office changes from a quiet workplace to the busy San Agustín Language Institute (SALI).  The English conversation classes offered are becoming increasingly popular – enrollment went up to 125 students in the month of August!  Friendships naturally form between students and teachers as they spend 5 hours in conversation together a week.  Every week our students are invited to participate in the university ministry and many are faithfully attending.  They are receiving solid Biblical teaching as well as becoming integrated into the strong community there.  Continue to pray for the English classes that the teachers would have wise answers for the questions the students ask, that the students would have an interest in spiritual things and would be brought to a personal relationship with the Savior.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Sinergia Preparing Business Classes

Sinergia has had a busy month as the employees are developing a business training course for its clients.  Each month for the next four, Sinergia will hold a class focusing on a variety of topics including, book keeping and inventory, investing, selling and advertisement, and implementing the Gospel into business.  These courses begin on September 15; pray that they would be glorifying to God and useful in the lives of the clients.

Sinergia will also be conducting an Impact Assessment (IA) over the next few months which will give a general idea of the effect that the microfinance organization has had on the community.

On July 31st, we all rejoiced to celebrate the wedding of Norvil, one of the carpenters from the Parish Woodshop.  It was an encouraging sign of the tremendous growth that all the men in the shop are showing in their Christian walk.  Stuart Mills continues to lead a Bible study every morning; they are currently studying the book of Exodus.

Parish is gearing up to send a shipment of gift shop items to the United States.  They will be available for purchase on www.parishfurniture.com in October.  Please be praying for the provision of a smaller shop location as Parish seeks to lower costs.  Also, it may be nearing the time when some of the men branch out from Parish to begin their own carpentry shops.  Pray for God’s timing in this and all other transitions going on at Parish.

MEDICAL MINISTRY

3 Month Old Clinic Patient with Heart Murmur

Daniela Sal Daña, one of the clinic’s newest patients, is 3 months old.  She has a heart murmur which causes her to frequently turn blue due to lack of oxygen.  Dr. Julton Tomanguillo has recommended that Daniela travel to Lima to be seen by a pediatric cardiologist in the children’s hospital there.   He called the hospital and reserved a spot for little Daniela and her mother, but Daniela’s mother has already spent all of her money on tests and treatments for her baby.  Please pray for this family that Daniela would be able to receive proper care, and that she and her mother would come to know the Great Physician who heals all our diseases.  If you are able to help send Daniela to the hospital in Lima, please give donations to CMS and mark Clinic Patient Fund on the memo line.

CHURCH PLANTING AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

New Location for Cristo Rey

After a few months in a rented theater, with unsuccessful attempts to get the bathrooms in working order, Cristo Rey decided to move its Sunday meetings to another location closer to Casa San Agustín (the mission office).  The new auditorium is smaller, and slightly more expensive, but has much better lighting and clean, functioning bathrooms.  We have now been there for four successive Lord's Days and everything has been running smoothly.  We started a new membership information class on August 8th and on September 12th we will start an officer training class.  Although we don't have any elder candidates yet, we do have several good future deacons.  Please pray that the Lord will continue to bring us new visitors and that He will provide wise and mature leaders for this young church.

A few of the many new students coming to our university ministry meetings are beginning to show an interest in the church.  One is even in the members' information class.  We are also getting several visitors from the SALI English classes.  This past Lord's Day all of the cell groups got together for a church-wide luncheon at Casa San Agustín after church.  We had well over 100 in attendance and made many new contacts.  Please pray for these visitors, that they would blossom into solid friendships and result in the growth of the church.

SHORT TERM TEAMS

Trujillo Blessed by Many visitors

Thanks to several churches and groups who came to serve in Peru, we now have a new parking lot at Arevalo church, a storage shed at the medical clinic in Wichanzao, and a new kitchen in a church outside of Cajamarca. We also were able to offer a youth retreat for the young people in Arevalo, and a medical campaign that provided care to many patients.  We are so blessed to have such great partners and look forward to next year’s groups!  Heartfelt thanks to our brothers and sisters with FPC Corinth, MS, FPC Kosciusko, Trinity Presbyterian in Tuscaloosa, AL, IPC Sr. High from Memphis and Disciple Makers from Pennsylvania.  If you are interested in partnering with us in Peru, please contact Alleen McLain, alleenmclain@me.com.
