Can I Bring a Friend?
About a year ago, my friend, Rebecca asked me if she could bring a friend to bible study. Of course, I said, "Yes!" We love it when God brings new people to bible study or cell group. Her friend was Rose. She had just broken up with her boyfriend, whom she had been living with, and was really struggling. After bible study that night, she stayed with Rebecca and shared so much of her life. I remember praying silently and just asking God to give me the right words for her. Providentially, Rebecca left Peru shortly thereafter, but left Rose "with us" for the next 6 months. She began to come to cell group, bible study, staying afterwards for so many talks late into the night and eventually church. In some of our first talks, Rose talked about demon possession (she thought she maybe had a demon in her) and experiences she had in other churches that seemed outside of the biblical perspective of true saving grace. It was very daunting for me, but I continued to remind myself that the Holy Spirit and the Lord saves, I am just called to share truth. And it was not just us, but the entire church coming around to love her and share the gospel with her.
Rose had so many questions. The Lord was clearly pursuing her! She had a background or exposure to the health and wealth gospel. Rose's first impression was that our church was a cult. I recall one night specially where Rose was telling me about how she was receiving advice from a pastor in another church saying, "you just need more faith." My response was to ask if she had recognized her sin and asked for forgiveness? Accepted Christ as her Savior to rule in her heart and her life? She said, "I understand all of that, but have not taken that step. Why? What am I waiting for?" My response was that before she can look for more faith, she needs to find her faith first by accepting Christ as her Savior. Rose wanted to know, when will that happen? I told her, I don't know, but I trust in the Lord's perfect timing and to continue to listen and wait for the Lord. What could I say other than to repeat the gospel to her daily? and pray for her!
Time passed and she continued to come to bible study, cell group and then church. Eventually, the Holy Spirit opened her heart, mind and ears to hear the true gospel, the Good News . . .and she accepted Christ as her Savior!! Since then, Rose has joined the church and continues to grow in her faith daily. She is one of our most committed members. She is hungry to learn more, to serve, to give God all the glory. She has become a dear friend.
So often, we get caught up in day to day life and then the Lord brings a Rose into our life and reminds me why we are here. Glory be to God! Thanks for His faithfulness and mercies new each day!
